-
There
should always be at least 4 INCHES of good strong ice before
going out on the ice.
-
Always
have parents check ice by chopping a hole and measuring the
thickness.
-
When
your parents determine the ice is safe they should set boundaries
for you to skate with-in
-
Watch
out for spring holes, black or mushy areas of ice where the
ice is thinner and weaker than the rest.
-
Reservoir's
usually have an area where the water goes in or out of the
reservoir, stay clear of these areas, the ice is thinner there.
-
Do
not go on rivers or streams!
-
On
cranberry bogs, watch out for main ditches where ice is thinner,
never skate on areas where the vines are showing through the
ice, never skate near the flumes.Check to see if there is
water under the ice, ice is unsafe if it has no water to support
it.
-
Snow
on the ice does not mean the ice is safe, snow acts as an
insulator and ice may not be safe
-
Always
have someone with you when you go on the ice!
-
If
you fall through the ice - flutter kick your legs and yell
loudly for help. If you are able to get back on the ice try
to move to the shore on your be
lly to displace your weight.
-
Remember
the only safe ice is at a skating rink
