At last months drill, Captain Santos had each Firefighter write down on a piece of paper their strongest knowledge of each piece of apparatus and weakest piece of apparatus. He then had them write down their strongest fire ground skill and then their weakest fire ground skill. He never said much after that and Company 1 went on with their Safety Officer drill. Well, this month he surprised them with multiple practical drill stations setup at the Training Facility. Firefighters...

Company 1 members give all the rescue tools a good workout at a mock motor vehicle accident at the CFD Training Center. The expectations of life depend upon diligence; the mechanic that would perfect his work must first sharpen his tools. Confucius. (Photo’s by Firefighter Mike Shaw and Chief Craig Weston)
Experienced Firefighters Night also celebrated the 75th Anniversary of the Carver Firefighters Association. A delicious clam boil was served by members of Company 1 followed by length of service awards, gifts for all 25 year members and a great digital slide show of old fire department photo's. A wonderful night to celebrate the service members who have worked towards making the Carver Fire Department what it is today. (Photo's by Firefighter Steve Falconer)

A great turnout for the Deputy's 3 Company drill on Rapid Intervention Team training. A Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) is a team of two or more firefighters dedicated solely to search and rescue of other firefighters in distress. This is an extremely important safety practice to backup firefighters who are operating in hazardous environments. (Photo’s by Firefighter Danny Wilcox)

The annual truck inspection competition was held on August 10, 2010. Organized by FF Bob Middendorf, the event challenges the 3 Firefighting Company's to have the cleanest piece of apparatus. This year it was Pumping Engines. The trucks are judged for all facets of interior and exterior appearance. Many man hours (and woman hours) of labor are volunteered by the company members to outdo the other ends of Town. The winner of the competition this year was Company 3. The...

The annual Carver Firefighters Association Clambake is a sellout every year feeding 430 hungry people. A true old fashioned rock bake, it takes the work of about 50 firefighters to prepare and serve, but the results are worth it! Clams, hot dogs, sweet potato, white potato, fish, sausage, corn, onions and dressing all cooked to perfection and topped off with watermelon. Everyone is smiling at the end of the day. CFD members and apparatus participated in a Mass Casualty Drill hosted by Carver EMS. A simulated Hazardous Material spill at the Carver High School required that 15 people with simulated injuries had to be attended to and transported to Jordan Hospital. (Photo’s by 314 Retired)
Feelin the heat! Members of the Recruit Class of 2010 as well as some of our more experienced members had the opportunity to train under live fire conditions at the Barnstable County Fire Training Academy Burn Building. Many thanks to the Plymouth County Fire / Rescue Training Association who invited our people to come along and train with a class that Plymouth County was conducting. The annual Brush Fire Drill this year was one to remember. Orchestrated by Deputy Germaine, the CFD management team kept things moving despite the cold wet conditions. Occasional Brushbreakers got mired in the mud, but that gave everyone a chance to work on their winch and snatch block skills. (Photo’s by Firefighters Steve Falconer and Jerry Vaughan)
Final Practical Exam for the Class of 2010. We are almost there. Four hours of practical evolutions with every Instructor from the Deputy on down looking over our shoulders. This stuff is soooo much easier now that we are doing it as a team. (Photo's by Firefighter Mike Shaw and 314 Retired, Gerry Farquharson)
The graduation ceremony for the Class of 2010. Family and friends are there to witness that special moment when titles change from Recruit to FIREFIGHTER! Speeches by the Association President, a Selectman, the Deputy, the Chief and even State Fire Marshal Coan. This was a day to remember. Three Carver Engines ended up pumping water at a large fire in a former cold storage facility in Onset early Monday morning. Onset Fire quickly struck 5 Alarms summoning mutual aid from area departments. Additionally 2 Strike Teams (each 5 Engines) as well as the State Dept. of Fire Services Incident Support Unit and Incident Rehab Unit were called to 'he scene. Mutual Aid was coordinated by Plymouth County Control. (Photo's by Deputy Eric Germaine)
Company's 1 & 2 responded to a small brush fire on Wenham Road that extended to a fence. Even though we had 2.5" of rain 2 days prior, a brush fire can still move rapidly after a few hours of sun, wind and fairly warm temperature. (Photo’s by Firefighter Danny Wilcox)
6 Carver Firefighters along with Engine 2 attended a 2 day Large Diameter Hose course taught by the Massachusetts Fire Academy at the Plympton Fire Department. Learning the latest techniques of moving water through big lines from instructors who interact with firefighters all over the state enhances the firefighters confidence and also he/she brings back skills that can be passed along to others. The Recruit Class of 2010 spends an evening cutting, prying, pushing & pulling metal using some of the finest rescue tools available today. Guided by instructors who have both a high level of training plus years of experience in actual rescue work, the recruits do the work under realistic but controlled conditions. The vehicles used are donated to the FD and then prepared with a front end loader to simulate actual motor vehicle accident damage. (Photo’s by 314 Retired, Gerry...
Apparatus and crews from all 3 Carver Stations battled a 4:48 am structure fire on Crystal Lake Drive. First arriving units were met with heavy fire conditions and neighbors reporting a man trapped in the home. After repeated rescue attempts and searches it was determined that the occupant was not inside, even though his car was in the driveway. The Class of 2010 gets out of the classroom and into the maze and smokehouse. This gives a really new perspective to trying to function in all that gear and breathing apparatus. It also starts building the team concept which is so imperative in firefighting operations. (Photo’s by Firefighter Danny Wilcox)
Once a year the Carver Firefighters Association has a social to honor the wives and significant others who put up with so much as their spouses perform the duties of being Call Firefighters. Reheating meals that were left, being late for functions, running out from birthday party's, etc. etc. etc.. The list goes on and on. A Call Firefighter has to drop everything and go when the beeper goes off. A flower, a nice meal, and an opportunity to meet...
With numerous ponds, reservoirs, and winter flooded cranberry bogs, teaching Carver's children about ice safety is a challenge that our Ice Safety Team takes very seriously. A very comprehensive program has evolved over time and seems to get better every year. It is apparent by the lack of calls for children through the ice that the program is working. Now if we could just figure out how to educate the dogs to stay off of thin ice. (Photo’s by Firefighter...
The Class of 2010 receive initial instruction in Personal Protective Equipment and Self Contained Breathing Apparatus. In the next few weeks using this equipment will become second nature to them. And for good reason, without it they could not survive in the atmospheres that they will routinely enter at structural fires and hazardous material incidents. (Photo’s by Firefighter Steve Falconer)
Ice rescues are the theme for drills this month and Company 3 had a great day on the ice. Operating the Hovercraft takes considerable skill and practice. Good ice made for a excellent opportunity to practice opening holes for drafting operations. The ice auger makes a perfect hole for a special suction strainer used when drafting sites are frozen over. (Photo’s by 314 Retired, Gerry Farquharson)
