About 12 hours after returning from a very serious MVA rollover and Med Flight on Route 44, Companies 1 and 2 utilizing Rescue 1, Engine 1 and 2 were dispatched to a head on collision in the area of Main Street and Meadow Street. On Arrival, C1 reported two crashed motor vehicles approximately 150 feet apart, each with a person heavily entrapped inside and requested Company 3 with Engine 3 to respond. Rescue 1 with crew, was positioned between the two vehicles with the front pre-connected jaws tools ordered to Car 1 and the side precoonects tools and crew going to Car 2. Engine 3’s crew assisted with manpower, a charged hose line, cribbing and their portable jaws unit, while Engines 1 and 2 worked on Car 2 with their portable jaw units, charged hose lines and manpower. The extrication on both vehicles took time as roofs, doors and dashboards were removed and displaced on both vehicles simultaneously This was one of the more difficult MVA scenes we have managed, where every jaws of life tool and technique was utilized by two separate Fire Teams to free the occupants in a timely manner. Overall, seven jaws of life tools, four coded electric light reels, battery operated hand tools and all our portable lights/light towers were utilized simultaneously on both vehicles. Both patients were successfully extricated and put in Carver EMS care. Having a well designed Heavy Rescue appartus, combined with years of hands on jaws training paid big dividends and I am very proud of how our Public Safety Departments worked together to give the two occupants the best chance for survival.
