Carver Fire, Police and EMS responded to a crash at the intersection of Gate and High Street last night. Initial reports stated that a car struck and snapped a utility pole, with the driver trapped in the car and live wires on top of the vehicle.
Fire crews worked with Carver Police and Carver EMS to quickly and efficiently stabilize the overturned vehicle, and extract the occupant using the Jaws of Life. The patient was transported to a local trauma center. The Roadway was closed for several hours while utility crews repaired damaged utility lines.
Carver Fire, Police and EMS respond to all entrapment calls with a coordinated response. This brings crews staffing a Heavy Rescue, two Engine Companies, one Brush Breaker, an ALS Ambulance and multiple Police Cruisers. This ensures sufficient manpower on scene for extrication, patience care, traffic control and scene security, plus it automatically dedicates a crew to establish a landing zone for a medical helicopter if needed.
Rescue 1 carries five preconnected hydraulic Jaws of Life Rescue tools, along with dozens of other pieces of specialized equipment to mitigate these incidents. Each engine carries a cordless Jaws of Life combination tool, but the primary goal of these rigs at these calls is to provide firefighters in gear with a charged hoseline at the ready in case things go bad.
