A very close call was averted a few days before Christmas when a homeowner had a stove fire while the oven was in a self cleaning cycle. Numerous Firefighters responded with Car 1, Car 3, Rescue 1 and Engine's 1 and 3, to a serious MVA head on collision, involving a large trash type truck and a smaller car. One person was severely trapped in the smaller vehicle, with Firefighters using the Jaws of Life and other rescue tools to free the occupant. One of the highlights of my career was participating in the Buzz Off Challenge, giving back and helping to fight Cancer as a Team. A group of 20 Carver Firefighters, EMS Director Tom Walsh and our Town Administrator, banded together in support of Zach, shaving our heads, making some donations and letting everyone fighting Cancer know they are not alone. Our Dive Team really stepped up to the plate this weekend, taking up the initiative to cleanup a portion of Sampson's Pond in South Carver. Engines 1, Engine 3 and Car 3 were directed into a very remote clearing, finding a large logging feller buncher that was on fire. Big props to the Carver Police Department for organizing a very successful "National Night Out" for all of Carvers Public Safety to interact with residents of our town. While at a water rescue drill on Sampson Pond, Company 3 got toned out for a reported car fire in the Wareham Street area of south Carver. Car 3, Engine 3 and Breaker 28 handled the call. The driver of the dump truck escaped unharmed. Firefighters secured leaking hazards on scene with hazmat booms, pads and by inserting plugs in the leaking fuel tanks. This week our new Firefighters where given a great course on Rapid Intervention by our Recruit Trainers. Each firefighter got a chance to practice working as a coordinated TEAM, searching with ropes, learning how to use their buddy breathing equipment and practice realistic self rescue techniques that may need to be used in the event a firefighter becomes trapped or disoriented. Our Recruit Training Team spent the week teaching our newest firefighters Fire Hoses and Streams, Fire Control and Ventilation techniques. Firefighters got a chance to practice cutting ventilation holes in our roof prop, and practice hydraulic ventilation in our search and rescue building. Instructors also taught proper hose rolls, how to properly pack and unload our water supply and attack lines and correct fire stream patterns. Overall, our new firefighters are doing great! While fire crews were finishing up at a structure fire at 73 Main Street, Company's 1 and 3 were dispatched to a reported injured snowmobiler in the Dunham/Luncas Road area of the Myles Standish State Forest. The Class of 2014 gets out of the classroom and into our new maze and smokehouse. This gives a really new perspective to trying to function in all that gear and breathing apparatus. Our newest Recruit Firefighters get their first opportunity to try on their full PPE gear and work with Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA's) during Thursday nights class. Fire instructors Lt. Mark Moran, Lt. Chris Vincent, Firefighter Mike Harriman and Firefighter Rick Leopardi teach weekly SCOTT checks along with some basic techniques of donning and doffing their SCBA's. Firefighters from Company 3 utilized Engine 3, Breaker 28, Tanker 1, Rescue 2 and our Hovercraft to review winter fire operations and winter ice rescues. Unique training stations were set up along the ponds edge, where groups of Firefighters each got a chance to drive our hovercraft and rescue a simulated person through the ice. Carver Fire Dive Team Members, under the careful instructions of Dive Master/Lieutenant Josh McDermott, geared up for Ice Dive scenarios at our Hall Bog training site. Diving under the ice is extremely dangerous, but our Dive Team must be proficient in their skills if needed to rescue someone who has fallen below the ice. The Recruit Class of 2014 and the CFD Officers and Instructors get to know each other on the first day of Recruit Training. Firefighters off of Engine 3 made quick of a truck fire off of Lakeview Street, Sunday afternoon. Prior to Firefighters arrival, the vehicle was originally located up against the home. Firefighters assisted Carver EMS with removing a patient from a home after the Blizzard. Due to a very long un-plowed driveway length, firefighters assisted Carver EMS, utilizing Brush Breaker 27 and Forestry 25 to make assess to the home and ultimately bring the patient out to the main road and an awaiting ambulance.
